Plant based protein: Developments in Canada and the Netherlands – Opportunities for Collaboration

The Canadian Prairie Provinces are home to more than 28 million hectares of arable land, with annual production of 60 million metric tonnes of crops, resulting in 12 million metric tonnes of protein. Protein Industries Canada, Canada’s plant protein innovation supercluster, was created to ensure ongoing investment in technology and innovation that enables the plant protein value chain to respond to shifts in consumer demands, operating environments, and, business realities. PIC, representing 190 members across a broad range of activity in the plant protein sector, focuses its investment in priority areas identified by industry that represent the most significant opportunities for growth.

The Netherlands is an agrifood powerhouse, the world's number 2 exporter of agricultural products and home to the world's number 1 food and agriculture university in Wageningen. The East Netherlands boasts more than 60 companies and research institutions working at the forefront of protein-transition technologies. This is a globally necessary transition from diets requiring high volumes of animal protein to diets based much more on vegetable protein. The significant concentration of knowledge and experience forms a solid platform for expanding the export of products, concepts and technologies developed with partners in the Netherlands.

During this webinar, we will focus on the latest developments in plant-based proteins – strategy, innovation, challenges and the opportunities these present for collaboration. We will give an overview of efforts to build greater collaboration between the Netherlands and Canada, including upcoming summits and matchmaking to connect Canadian and Dutch organizations.
